This is a fascinating example of an application of AI. The current discourse around AI can be pretty negative as many of the downsides are apparent and widespread. However, AI has many good uses as well. Like any technology, its effect on the world depends on its user.
We are in a period of mass language extinction. As people become more connected with the world, small community languages go unused and eventually become forgotten. Many of these languages have no native writing system and are not recorded anywhere. Once they’re gone, they’re gone. To preserve these languages, AI can serve as an interactive archive, storing that knowledge and producing it when requested. It’s not a perfect replication of the language, which during its lifetime is dynamic, but it’s superior to a database of voice recordings.
